How to keep your team motivated and happy

It's no secret that we're in unusual times. So, finding ways to keep your team motivated, happy, healthy and connected is key. Studies show that when your employees are healthy (mentally and physically), productivity levels go up which means everyone benefits.

With most people working remotely and others transitioning to a hybrid model, the work environment has changed drastically. That means new challenges and higher stress levels. For some people, the pandemic has resulted in spending more time at home, sitting down for longer periods and neglecting regular exercise routines. Experts warn that this change of behavior toward a more sedentary lifestyle can put our health at risk. In addition, some workers say they feel isolated, more lonely, anxious, depressed and even bored. Multiple studies show younger people, in particular, suffer because of social distancing measures.

So, what can we do, to preserve our team's wellbeing during these uncertain times? First, make sure your employees stay connected and get lots of exercise. Living in San Diego, we are  fortunate in that we have near perfect weather year-round, which means outdoor activities such as hiking and biking are easy to do. Not to mention, it's FUN as there's so many places to explore. But having said, let's be honest. Will your team take the initiative and exercise on their own?

On an intellectual level, we all know exercise is good for us but DOING it, is a whole different story which is why you need someone to hold you accountable. And preferably, someone who can also make it FUN and engaging. As a Team building & Tour business, we have been leading walks featuring “Secret San Diego" spots since 2003 so this is our passion. For us, it is a true joy showing off areas we know people wouldn’t necessarily find on their own.

In fact, this year we are offering "Get Fit Walking" Adventures - which is part of our Corporate Wellness initiative featuring unique neighborhoods. The walks are four to five miles and designed for all fitness levels. We will be running a variety of different walks every week - from beach hikes to historical neighborhoods. The 60-minute walks are not only a great way to keep your team moving, it's a great way to connect them with like-minded co-workers who also want to stay in shape.

If you have been wanting to find a safe way to keep your team healthy, motivated, and connected, give us a call and we'll provide you with a list of “Get Fit Walking” Adventure dates. You can reach us at 619-917-6037 or menkin@wheretours.com

6 Reasons Why You Should Be Walking with Us

·        *  Hidden Gems will be featured. You will then have new areas to walk!

·         * Accountability - Being part of Get Fit Walking will ensure you get your steps in.

·        *  Our walks are designed for all fitness levels. They average 3.5 to 4 miles with no steep hills.

·         * Connections and camaraderie will happen as you meet like-minded people who want to stay in shape.

·        * Added value: Some of the walks will feature Nutrition & Immunity Experts

*Added value: Some of the walks will end at outdoor restaurants/cafes.

Electric Bike Tours San Diego

Now that summer is in full swing in San Diego, it's a perfect time to get outside and explore the sights on one of our fun ELECTRIC BIKE TOURS!

It's no secret that San Diego is super scenic but if you want to experience some of our more amazing views, there's no way around it. You'll have to head up some hills and if you're on a bike, Electric is the way to go. Not only are they super easy to operate, it's extremely enjoyable and instead of dreading and avoiding those big hills, you'll be taking them on... one by one, with a big smile on your face.

Prior to launching our Electric Bike Tours, I must admit that I wasn't totally sold. As Marc knows, I'm a creature of habit plus I love my reliable and trusty Trekster, so why change anything? But the truth is, I would often avoid hills so without realizing it, I was missing out on some amazing views.  My other beef?  I like moving my legs as I like to get a workout. I had the impression that with these Electric bikes, I would never move my legs because the motor was doing all the work.

It wasn't until I hopped on one, that I realized I was wrong! With the Pedal Assist feature, you're always moving your legs. The Pedal Assist simply helps you but you still need to move your legs. In fact, the only time I didn't move my legs is if a hill was truly too big for me and I needed some major help. In that case, I would simply turn on the throttle feature.  Because I like to get a workout, I didn't use the throttle version that much but it was nice knowing that it was there, if I ever needed it!

In celebration of California reopening, we are now offering Public "Discover Secret La Jolla Electric Bike tours." Check out our website for dates but we still have room on June 17 & June 19!

Click here for more details on our Electric Bike tours and other public adventures.

Look forward to seeing you soon!  Happy Travels!!

Virtual Team Building Events

2021. If you're like us, you're probably scratching your head and asking "Whoa, how did THAT happen?"

While there's no question that COVID has turned our world upside down, it also gave many of us the opportunity to Pause, Reset and Reinvent. That certainly was the case for us. When COVID first hit, we had to quickly pivot and transition many of our "in person" Team building programs (such as our popular Scavenger Hunts and Game shows) to "Virtual" offerings. And along the way, we got to develop some new Team building programs like our Creative Icebreakers. So FUN!

But here's what was especially cool - and totally unexpected. Prior to starting our Team building and Tour business back in 2003, Darlynne was in the Television News industry for more than 21 years. During that time, she was an Anchor/Reporter, Writer and Producer, so she's very comfortable with anything that's video related. Who would have known that years later, those Television skills would play a major role in this new Virtual world? Thanks to Darlynne's TV background, we were able to create some very unique and ORIGINAL Livestream programming, which has been super exciting for us!

As a Team building company, we are passionate about Health and Wellness in the workplace. And when we combined that passion with Darlynne's TV and Storytelling skills, our Development Team was able to create a whole array of amazing, interactive programming.

Over the last several months, we've produced a number of Livestream shows for the corporate world, all ranging in topics from Employee Wellness, Healthy Nutrition Habits and Smart Money tips. But our favorite show topic has allowed us to "lean in" to our "Tour Guide" roots.

It's called Best of San Diego  and it's all about showcasing secret San Diego spots - something very close to our heart.

In a time when we're all working remotely and staying closer to home, it's easy to feel disconnected. Which is why these Livestream Programs have been amazing because it helps Employers EMPOWER their team, whether it's teaching them how to manage their money, eat healthy OR get outside and explore cool San Diego spots that are off-the-beaten path!

If you'd like to learn more about our new Livestream ORIGINAL Programming, let's connect! In the  meantime, enjoy these videos: Livestream Topic Shows.

Rewarding Remote Employees

Finding unique and meaningful ways to thank your employees is SO important. Especially now, given what's happening in the world and the fact that majority of U.S. employees are working remotely. According to a Gallup poll, remote workers are more likely to feel lonely and isolated as compared to  colleagues who work at the office. Because of this simple factor, it's crucial that employers recognize and acknowledge team members for their hard work, on a regular and consistent basis.

While some companies can offer things like luxurious hotel stays or golf excursions, not everyone has deep pockets.  The good news? There are plenty of ways you can show your team you care, without breaking the bank. Here's one idea - give them an EXPERIENCE of a lifetime.  For example, find out what their favorite restaurant is and treat the employee and their spouse. But here's the thing, don't treat them to just any old restaurant. Do your research. Pick a 5-star restaurant you know they love but either can't afford OR don't have time to find a babysitter. In that case, go the extra mile and hire a babysitter for the night!

Doing something that's totally "Out of the Ordinary" is another way to go. Maybe treat them to a Hot Air Balloon ride, or how about a Zip line Adventure on Catalina Island? (We still remember doing this for a client!) One of our popular offerings is our Dream Day Experiences.   These are custom experiences that are typically designed around a person's preferences. Are you an animal lover? Maybe our De-stress with Dogs/Cats is your thing. Or perhaps you enjoy seeing incredible views? Our Best Views in San Diego is a custom tour showcasing one-of-a-kind views from cool roof top lounges to historical monuments.

Does your employee enjoy fun adventures that he can share with his family & friends? How about one of our Urban Challenge Scavenger Hunts? And yes, it's Covid safe!

The bottom line: think outside the box and don't be afraid to do more than the typical corporate gift card or cash. If you have an employee OR employees you'd like to reward and need ideas, give us a call. Creating unique memorable adventures is something we absolutely ENJOY doing!  Email us at menkin@wheretours.com OR call 619-917-6037 to schedule an adventure.

Safe Outdoor Activities During Covid

Ever since COVID-19 came about, it seems like all we hear is what we CAN'T do. NO indoor dining. NO large public gatherings. NO fans at sporting events. The list goes on and on.  It makes us wonder: Is there anything we CAN do?  Actually, there's PLENTY we can do!  The key thing to remember: Keep it outdoors!

Because we live in San Diego where the weather is typically beautiful year round, finding fun things to do OUTSIDE is not a problem. And now that it's summer, the temps are super nice and the days are longer so it's an ideal time to be outdoors.

Besides the "fun factor," there's also plenty of health benefits to being outside. Studies show that exposure to sunlight and breathing in the fresh air often leads to better concentration levels, happier moods, and an increase in physical stamina and fitness levels.. just to name a few.

If you're tired of being cooped up, our advice is to get OUTDOORS and enjoy Mother Nature!  Here's a list of fun & safe OUTDOOR activities you CAN DO during Covid-19:

*Go for a Walk:  Our new division, Where You Want To Be Fit Club, is now offering one-hour small group Wellness Walks.  This easy going hike is a perfect way to discover cool San Diego spots while practicing physical  distancing & safety guideline rules. Sign ups will be limited, in an effort to keep everyone safe. Click HERE for dates & registration.  Don't miss out on the FUN!

*Secret Spots Super Challenge:  Gather everyone in your Social Bubble and sign up for our ridiculously FUN Urban Challenge Scavenger Hunt! Teams will be given a series of fun tasks that will take them all over Balboa Park.  Physical distancing & safety guideline rules will be followed. Sign ups will be limited in an effort to keep everyone safe. Click HERE for dates & registration. Don't wait to register!

*PRIVATE Experiences: Prefer doing a fun outing with people ONLY in your SOCIAL BUBBLE?  No problem! We do offer PRIVATE SMALL GROUP EXPERIENCES. Email us at menkin@wheretours.com OR call 619-917-6037 to schedule a PRIVATE GROUP ACTIVITY.

Healthy tips for Employees

There's no question that the world is in unique times. New developments are happening every day and with the current lock down, physical distancing rules and more people working from home, it's no wonder stress levels are at an all time high.

But studies show that if you want to help your employees lead a healthier lifestyle, there are some easy things you should encourage them to do.  First, get them outdoors. Going for a 10-minute walk around the neighborhood is much better than eating lunch at your desk. Research shows that fresh air and exercise releases chemicals called endorphins, which produces positive feelings in the body. As a result, productivity levels typically go up.

Now that the warm weather is here, it's also a perfect time to be outdoors. Instead of doing the usual Zoom Meeting call, why not set up an Walking Meeting for your staff?  You can still wear masks and practice physical distancing but you'll be outside enjoying the summer time weather, as opposed to being cooped up indoors.  Some of our more popular Team building programs include our Outdoor Meetings and Wellness Walks.   We have noticed that companies who take advantage of these kinds of programs, often have happier employees and less conflict at the workplace.

The good news is that all of this is easy and it doesn't cost much. All it requires is an attentive boss (that's you!) who's "in tune" with the staff.  Want more tips on how to keep your team happy and healthy?  Check out our latest episode of "Live Your Dream."   Click HERE.

Mastering Virtual Meetings

As a team building company, our focus is all about strengthening relationships and face to face interactions. But because of COVID-19, that's all changed. For the time being, in-person meetings have been put on hold and as a result, many people are working remotely and communicating through online platforms such as Zoom, Webex and Remote HQ.

For some, this Virtual world can be scary. The lack of comfort can make it hard for some to open up, relax and communicate with each other virtually. Before starting our business, I was a TV News Reporter so I understand how speaking in front of a camera can be uncomfortable for some people. During my news career, it wasn't uncommon for my interview subject to freeze up right before the camera started rolling. Fortunately, I learned pretty quickly the art of calming down a person's nerves!

Now years later, I'm leaning into those very same skills. When COVID-19 first hit, we received calls from nervous colleagues wanting advice on how to look and sound good on Zoom. The questions ranged from "How come I look so pale" to "Yikes, that's what my voice sounds like?" As funny as these questions sound, they're all good questions. And, that's what led us to create our online course "Mastering Virtual Meetings." But, here's the thing. Mastering this new Virtual world is so much more than knowing what color to wear OR what your background should look like. It's knowing how to build content that will engage and inspire your audience, so they're moving with you and not against you.

Although many in the meetings industry and business world are still trying to figure out their "next steps," a growing number have already transitioned their conferences to full-on digital events OR the hybrid approach, which incorporates both face-to-face elements with a digital component.

And for those of you in sales? Videos will play an even bigger role in the Sales process. The bottom line? Getting comfortable with this Virtual world AND understanding the power of video, is a must if you want to stay ahead of the competition.

As uncomfortable as this may all sound, it doesn't have to be. In fact, once you master the Virtual world, it's quite FUN. And, it shouldn't cost you an arm & a leg. To help you navigate through this new medium, we've put together an online workshop which consists of three main topics:

A. Mastering the Online Platform: How to look & sound good virtually + Bonus Tips!
B. Creating Engaging Videos: How to shoot & edit videos using your smart phone
C. Video Marketing Content: Using video to set yourself apart

It's no secret that we LOVE the Video world and we understand its many advantages. But like many of you, I've been in the business world for a long time so I get your concerns. In fact, it's my combined experience as both an on-air talent and longtime business owner, that gives me a fresh perspective... allowing me to empathize with other business owners/leaders in a unique way. There are SO many benefits to this Virtual world and I'm excited to share our knowledge with you!

This online Workshop is designed for those who want to pivot their career to the next level but aren't sure how to get there. It's also ideal for Sales Teams wanting to up their game.

Introducing our New Travel Show - This Is Our Town!

If you've ever been on one of our tours, then you know we're all about the unique places. You know, areas that are off-the-beaten path? Living in San Diego is a perfect destination for our adventurous spirit because there's so many interesting places to check out.  From hidden walking paths to beautiful roof top lounges and fun historical landmarks, San Diego has a lot to offer. So when we were asked to create a fun Travel show focusing on hidden gems, how could we refuse? It's right up our alley!

"This is our Town" showcases secret San Diego spots and has the same fun, laid back feel as our walking, biking and custom Rent-a-Local tours. We've been creating these personalized tours since 2003 and we absolutely love taking people to these hidden areas. And let's face it. With everything that's happening in today's world, we all need a little escapism!

Our first episode focuses on one of our favorite neighborhoods - Mission Hills! We felt this was a perfect way to kick off our new series as this community is so special - and truly reflects the uniqueness of San Diego.

We want to give a Shout Out to our Publishing Partner, Seacoast Media Labs, for making this happen! Seacoast produces The Poway Eagle, Scripps Ranch News and the new Digital Magazine, Words & Pictures.  In addition to their online platforms, "This is our Town" will also be available on this blog, as well as our Facebook & Instagram pages, and YouTube Channel.

Walk of the Inns - A Unique Holiday Experience!

For most people, the holidays can be a hectic time of the year. But no matter how busy it is, there’s one event in Palm Springs that we absolutely enjoy, so when the date is announced, we do everything possible to keep it open. This year’s Walk of the Inns is Thursday December 12 and if you’ve never experienced this event, it’s worth the drive.

Every December, about 12 Bed and Breakfast and small boutique hotels open their doors from 6 PM to 9 PM, allowing visitors a chance to see these unique properties up close and personal. Each locale has its own special charm so it’s visually stunning. And because it’s the holiday season, the properties are decked out and quite festive! At some of the stops, don’t be surprised if they serve you cookies and hot chocolate or some other delicious surprise. Such a nice touch!

This is the event’s 24th year and it’s become a popular holiday tradition among locals and out-of-towners.  Last year, more than 1700 people attended but over the years, they’ve attracted as high as 2500.

Dominic L of Casa Cody says it’s a great way for people to get a behind the scenes look at some of the city’s wonderful properties. “Palm Springs has so many lovely B&B’s and quaint small hotels that are like no other,” Dominic says.  Casa Cody was founded in the 1920’s by Hollywood pioneer, Harriet Cody, cousin to the legendary, Buffalo Bill.  It’s the oldest, operating hotel in Palm Springs.

The self-guided tour kicks off at the Palm Springs Art Museum and the Palm Springs Women’s Club. Maps are provided and the route is easy to follow. Most people walk the route so wear comfortable shoes – sneakers are best – and dress warmly as temperatures do drop at night.  Another tip? Come early so you can check out all – or most of the B&B’s.  It may not seem like it, but 3 hours goes by quickly, so you’ll want to arrive as close to 6 PM as possible.

Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Safe Travels,

Wednesday, December 4, 2019

Over the years, we've created numerous Team Building programs. Some came to fruition because a client asked about it while others came from our imagination. While it's a lot of work to create original programs, it's also downright fun because it allows us to tap into our creative side, and explore new and exciting possibilities!

As any artist will tell you, it's very satisfying - and fulfilling whenever you create something new and then get to witness others enjoy it. People often ask us "What's your favorite Team Building program?" That's a tough question because the truth is, we love em all! But one of our newer programs called
"The Good Deeds Bus Experiment" has definitely captured our heart for many reasons.

For one thing, it's an immersive experience that showcases some of San Diego's secret spots. You know, places that are truly "off the beaten path." It could be anything from a little known historical suspension bridge to a unique walking path that overlooks the ocean. At several of the stops, we include surprises so for example, on our last program, we had a professional Hawaiian dancer who performed AND taught our group how to dance the hula. Imagine 50 people learning how to dance the hula right in the middle of a neighborhood! It was quite the scene. As a matter of fact, several of the neighbors came out and even joined us!

For us, seeing a group of strangers have fun together was super sweet. The last stop, also billed as the "highlight" of the adventure, was a mystery "volunteer location." For this particular group, the organizers chose to build trikes and then donate them to the Ronald McDonald House. Such a memorable way to kick off the holidays, and so much better than the usual office Happy Hour Get together.

Explore Maui from above.. on a cool Zipline Adventure!

As travel writers, we have visited so many beautiful destinations. People ask us all the time if we have a favorite place to vacation and while it's true we've seen many amazing places, there's one location that we feel is a perfect fit for us. That location is... drum roll please... Maui!  The plane ride from San Diego is super easy and once you arrive on the island, you can literally feel the stress melt away.

We've been to Maui several times so we definitely have our favorite hangouts. But this year, we decided to try something different so we went Ziplining!  We weren't exactly sure what to expect but boy, are we glad we went for it.

We chose Skyline Eco-Adventures and it was quite the experience! Their team did a great job at giving us an experience that we couldn't do on our own. Plus, we also got to learn a bit about the Hawaiian culture and what makes it so special.  If Ziplining is something you've been curious about, do yourself a favor and... GO FOR IT!   But don't take our word for it. Check out this fun travel video and see for yourself!

What's the difference between Where You Want To Be & Out of the Ordinary?

When we first launched Where You Want To Be in 2003, we were like 2 kids in a candy store.
Sure, it was hard work but for us, it was so much fun creating all those cool adventures. Then when Out of the Ordinary came along in 2015, that was a game changer when the two companies merged.

All of a sudden, people were asking "What's the difference between the two companies?" While it may seem like a simple question on the surface, it actually caused us to stop and really ask ourselves What's so special about each company and more importantly, why should people care?  To this day, people still ask us what's the difference so because of that, here's how we see it.

Out of the Ordinary creates high energy Team Building GAMES like Team Olympics, Survivor and Charity Bike Builds.  Think wildly competitive and ridiculously FUN team challenges. OOO offers 40 + Team Building programs, so there's lots of cool options!  In case you're thinking "but I'm not athletic," don't worry. We practice "Challenge by Choice" and our goal is to NEVER make anyone feel uncomfortable, so we take extra care in creating activities for all fitness levels.

Where You Want To Be specializes in unique Team Building EXPERIENCES. In fact, our goal is to give you a life experience so memorable, that you'll say "I'm exactly where I want to be!"  Because we're all about showcasing "secret San Diego spots," all of our experiences take place in areas that are "off the beaten path."  You know, places where the locals hang out!

While our signature product (and most requested!) is still our Urban Challenge Scavenger Hunt,  some of our other innovative experiences include our Good Deeds Bus Experiment, Wellness Walks and Arts Alive. All of these experiences not only feature hidden areas, they focus on "building up" teams, so expect lots of good facilitation and takeaways.

For more information on ALL our unique Team Building Experiences, log onto our website at www.wheretours.com   For those of you who are more visual, check out our FAQ video by clicking HERE.

Thanks for spending time with us.  Until we meet again...

Life is an adventure!

It's hard to believe that it's already August. How did that happen? It seems like it was just yesterday we all were sharing our New Year's resolutions. But here it is, late August and before you know it, the kids will be back in school and summer will be over. We can almost hear some of you groaning at this very thought!

But let's be honest. When you live in San Diego, summer is never really over. After all, we live in paradise and the weather is beautiful, year round.  For us, we especially love our balmy 72-degree weather because it's a perfect fit for what we do: creating unique Team Building Experiences.

We launched Where You Want To Be back in 2003 and since then, our programs have evolved. But this year, we've taken it to a whole new level as we've expanded our offerings and we're super excited! Our goal? To give you a life experience so memorable, you can't WAIT to come back for more.

While our ever popular Urban Challenge Scavenger Hunts continue to be our signature product, we've added some very cool and innovative experiences like our Wellness Walks and
Outdoor Meetings. The idea behind these new offerings allows us to show off
"hidden San Diego spots" (which is what we're known for) while incorporating takeaways that will help strengthen your team.

For example, Bridging the Gap is a unique experiential team bonding activity that gets your people talking and brainstorming together.  And to make it even more unique, our experienced guides/facilitators will walk you across 5 beautiful bridges, that serve as metaphors to the importance of "bridge building."

If you want to engage your team but your time is limited (say you only have about 1 hour?), there's our fun Creative Ice Breakers  which can be used to either kick off your meeting OR at the end of the day, to energize your team after a long day of meetings.  For those who prefer to explore the city while getting in a little bit of exercise, you may want to check out our Rise & Shine Running Tour.

While we happily could go on & on about all our newly created experiences, the best way to get the low down is by checking out our new website!  We can be found at www.wheretours.com
Thanks for spending time with us.

Until we meet again...

Happy Travels!

Ideas for a Fun & Unique Date Night!

People always ask us what we love the most about our jobs. That's a tough question because there's so many things we absolutely adore about our company.  It's fun, creative and yes, we get to do it together!  But one thing we really like is our freedom to create and execute some really cool adventures.

Then one day, we were talking to client who also did the adventure with his wife when the idea struck about teaming up and creating a fun "Couples Scavenger Hunt."  For 14 years, we've been creating these fabulous Urban Challenge Scavenger Hunt competitions as a corporate team building event. Over and over, we saw how it did wonders for promoting positive employee relationships. Why wouldn't it work for couples, whether they're married, engaged or in a serious relationship?

If you've been searching for a fun date night, we'd love for you to join us!  We're currently offering several dates - all in very cool locations - and all are expected to fill up quickly.

Make up your own team of 8 or join forces with others as you journey through Downtown San Diego. This is a perfect fit for a date night!

Throughout the adventure, teams will see all the latest & greatest additions in a cool neighborhood.

All adventures start at 10:30 AM and last until approximately 1:30PM
